Edo Queens have missed the chance to participate in their second CAF Women Champions League after being knocked out of the qualifier by Ghana’s Ampem Darkoa Ladies.
It was more of a heart break for the girls from Benin City who had won the WAFU B qualifiers in Burkina Faso via a shootout victory over the Ghanaian Ladies after the regular time produced a 2-2 draw. The match officials rather than blow for the extra-time, ordered the teams to head straight for the shootout. Ghana Football Association protested that the extra time of the match should have been played as stipulated the rules of the game.
CAF agreed and ruled that the extra time must have to be played, and it was decided in Egypt Thursday. Ampen Darkoa Ladies had their prayers answered when Afishata Mohammed scored in the first half of the extra time.
Edo Queens laboured to find the equaliser, which could have resulted in another shootout, but it never came, the game ended 3-2 in favour of the Ghanaian side.
Edo Queens returned back home crest fallen after missing out on the prize monies. Ampem Darkoa Ladies now will stay back in Cairo for the tournament that will run from November 1-15. Edo Queens featured in the 2024 tournament held in Morocco. They were the fourth placed team.
