Confederation of Africa Football said it will retain the two-year cycle Africa Cup of Nations after its president Patrice Motsepe proposed a four-year AFCON earlier in the year.
Football players, fans and federations were not so keen on the idea of having the AFCON every four years forcing CAF executive committee to have a rethink.
“The decision by the Executive Committee to reinstate the organisation of the Afcon every two years aims to advance, protect and promote the interests of African football and the 54 Caf Member Associations, as well as those of African players playing for clubs outside the continent,” Motsepe said in a statement.
The next Afcon will take place in 2027, with Kenya, Tanzania and Uganda jointly hosting the tournament, followed by editions in 2028, 2031 and 2033. There will be no tournament in 2030 because of the World Cup.
Meanwhile CAF has confirmed Samson Adamu as its general secretary. Adamu had stepped into the role on an interim basis since March 2026 after Veron Mosengo-Omba, a Swiss-Congolese official, stepped aside.
Adamu becomes the first Nigerian to hold the post since CAF was founded in 1957.
The 40-year-old, who previously served as CAF’s Director of Competitions, takes over the administrative helm of African football’s governing body following approval by the executive committee.
