Spanish prosecutors have reopened the sexual assault case against world famous singer Julio Iglesias who was accused by two former employees sexual abuse at his Caribbean properties.
The prosecutor’s office now considers that Spain’s National Court has jurisdiction to investigate the allegations, despite having dismissed an earlier complaint in January.
On Thursday, National Court Judge Antonio Pina gave Iglesias and the two women five days to submit arguments on whether the court has jurisdiction, according to Spanish news outlet El Diario.
The judge is expected to decide next week whether to open a criminal investigation, the daily reported, citing legal sources.
The case concerns allegations made by a former domestic worker and a physical therapist who worked at Iglesias’ residences in the Dominican Republic and the Bahamas in 2021.
The women accuse the singer of sexual assault, human trafficking for forced labor, imposing abusive working conditions, physical injuries and degrading treatment.
They allege that Iglesias exploited his position of power and their vulnerability while they worked at his properties. One former employee alleged that she was pressured into sexual encounters, while the other reported unwanted sexual touching.
Iglesias has denied the allegations, insisting that the accusations are entirely false.
The allegations first emerged in a joint investigation by El Diario and Univision News, in which the women described alleged sexual abuse and degrading working conditions.
The women initially filed a complaint with Spanish prosecutors in January through the international women’s rights organization Women’s Link Worldwide.
However, prosecutors closed their preliminary investigation later that month, concluding that the alleged offenses occurred outside Spain and that the case lacked sufficient connections to the country.
In September, the women filed a new criminal complaint directly with the National Court, prompting Judge Pina to request a fresh assessment of the court’s jurisdiction. AA
