Apart from Kelechi Iheanacho the Super Eagles will rely on many untested players as Russia square up against Nigeria in Tuesday’s international friendly at the Sovcombank Arena in Nizhny Novgorod, Russia.
A good number of first team players have opted out of the game; they include Ademola Lookman, Samuel Chukwueze, Alex Iwobi, Wilfred Ndidi, Ola Aina, Calvin Bassey, Bruno Onyemaechi, Tolu Arokodare and Semi Ajayi.
Speaking ahead of the match on Monday Chelle disclosed that his A team players have been held back by their respective clubs.
“Given the current situation, clubs are reluctant to send their players here. Because of this, we’ve brought in a number of very young players,” Chelle told reporters in Nizhny Novgorod.
“But this squad has the opportunity to show what it’s made of against a good team like Russia. Tomorrow, the team will be competing for our colors.”
Meanwhile, Russian football analysts and fans said they are used to not having the top team players.
The Nigerian top players were also absent from the 2025 Friendly in Russia.
“Will the Nigerian team be without any stars? That’s their right. It’s not the first time this has happened,” said former Spartak Moscow player Alexander Mostovoy.
The 41,300 capacity stadium is almost sold out for the game despite the no-show by the top Nigerian players.
