Nigerians still living in South Africa have called on the country’s authorities to step up investigation into the killing of a 58-year-old Nigerian bishop, Taiwo Michael Fakunle, in Johannesburg.
Bishop Fakunle from Iye Ekiti State was shot dead at his home in Kensington, Johannesburg on September 4 by two assailants who opened fire on him pumping seven bullets into his body to ensure he was dead.
According to the Nigerian Citizens Association South Africa (NICASA) the killing was a horrific and senseless act of violence against Nigerians, and the killers must be brought to book.
“We demand a thorough and credible investigation that will establish exactly what happened, identify all those responsible, apprehend the perpetrators and ensure that they are brought before the courts to face the full might of the law,” NICASA president Rev. Frank Onyekwelu.
“Please do not allow this case to go cold. Do not allow another Nigerian life lost to violence to become another forgotten file. We expect accountability and justice.
“The family deserves answers. The Nigerian community deserves justice. Bishop Taiwo deserves justice,” it said.
NICASA said it had brought the incident to the attention of the Consulate General of Nigeria in Johannesburg, while a murder case had also been opened at Jeppe Police Station.
The association called on the South African Police Service and other relevant authorities to investigate the killing with urgency, professionalism and transparency.
