The Benue State Police Command said it has arrested some suspects who allegedly blocked Nigeria Democratic Congress presidential candidate Peter Obi from visiting the State on Monday.
According to Benue State Commissioner of Police, Cletus Nwadiogbu, digital identification of the suspects is ongoing and a good number have been arrested. He said Obi’s convoy and the policemen deployed for the visit acted with caution to prevent a confrontation with the thugs.
He said the decision by the police to avoid a confrontation should not be interpreted as inaction, stressing that officers eventually escorted Obi safely back to the airport, from where he departed the state.
“The Command has commenced intelligence-led operations to identify those responsible. Key arrests have been made, while efforts are ongoing to apprehend all other persons connected with the incident,” Nwadiogbu said.
The CP insisted that the police remained a neutral and professional institution and would protect the rights of citizens regardless of their political affiliation, status or personal beliefs.
“Every Nigerian has the right to freedom of movement, irrespective of political affiliation, status or personal belief.
“No individual or group has the right to unlawfully obstruct another person’s movement,” he said.
He added that those found culpable for the breach of peace during the Obi visit would be prosecuted according to the law.
