Marshall Abubakar the lawyer representing social activist Martins Otse a.k.a VDM has claimed that doctors who harvested kidneys from several Abuja youths sold them for as much as N70m, while the exploited “donors” received a paltry N1.2m compensation.
According to Mr. Abubakar, vulnerable Nigerian youths are being lured into illegal kidney harvesting schemes by unscrupulous medical practitioners and their scouting agents. He alleged that about 10 youths have so far been discovered to be walking around with a single kidney after their organs were illegally harvested.
Speaking during an interview on Channels TV Morning Brief Friday, Mr. Abubakar alleged that other youths had been targeted around Masaka, Nyanya and Mararaba, with some allegedly recruited through agents.
He claimed that kidneys harvested from some victims were subsequently sold for between ₦50 million and ₦70 million, while the donors received only a fraction of the proceeds.
The Nigeria Police Force on Thursday arrested a doctor at Wellington Hospital in Life Camp, Abuja, after a petition from VDM.
This was after a victim identified as Ezekiel Samuel, realised that one of his kidneys was missing after a friend had lured him to the Wellington Hospital. The friend also later discovered he too was missing a kidney and allegedly confessed to have collected N7m to have his organ and that of Ezekiel harvested.
