The Nigeria High Commission in Ghana has questioned the veracity of claims by the Ghana Police it foiled a robbery attack involving a Nigerian citizen in the upscale Labone area of Accra.
According to police acting on intelligence on Thursday they had a wind of a robbery attack in the area on banks, including Zenith Bank, Ecobank and Ghana Commercial Bank. The police said the attack was foiled and two of the gang members were shot dead, while a Nigerian accomplice Augustine Okechuku Maazi, was arrested and undergoing interrogation.
Meanwhile GCB said in a statement on Friday, they were not aware of any robbery attempt on their bank
“GCB Bank wishes to clarify that no robbery or attempted robbery took place at our Labone Branch or on the Bank’s premises,” the statement said.
Following the incident the Nigeria High Commission sent the head of the Nigeria community in Ghana to the police station to verify the involvement of the Nigerian, since it doubted the claims by the police.
“The environment where the robbery took place is one of the safest environments in Ghana. It is close to 37 Military Base, the Ghanian Presidency, police headquarters and cantonment,” said Destiny Austine Omon media officer of the High Commission in an interview with Sahara Reporters.
“It does not add up for armed robbers wanting to do that scale of attack to be arrested with only a pistol. The armed robbers also used a vehicle that is registered. In Ghana, armed robbers use unregistered vehicles for their operations,” he said.
“In Labone, when you get to the bank areas, you will see officials with AK-47s; the place is very secure, that’s why banks situate their headquarters there and with what the police described, their actions are questionable.
The conflicting accounts have now raised questions about the precise nature of the incident, particularly whether the suspects were actually targeting the banks as alleged by the police and the circumstances leading to the deaths of the two other suspects.
Even so according to reports one of the robbery vehicles impounded by the police was discovered to have been in the custody of the police raising more doubt about what really occurred
