Redeemed Christian Church of God (RCCG), general overseer Pastor Enoch Adeboye, Sunday prayed for the return of Nigeria’s sporting glory days as the country continue to struggle for results in international sports.
Pastor Adegboye who presided over the August special Thanksgiving service and prayer session at church’s national headquarters in Ebute-Metta, Lagos, noted that Nigerians used to enjoy the success recorded by their sportsmen and women in the past.
“Lord, we pray that through the sportsmen, including the stakeholders, you will restore those glorious days in sport, particularly in Africa, and Nigeria,” Adeboye prayed.
“Those who are connected with sport one way or the other, that by the special grace of God, they will keep on succeeding, that all the glories that Nigeria used to enjoy in the past in sport would be restored. There was a time when Nigeria won the U-17 World Cup. That such glorious days would return.”
Nigeria is known as country with vast sports talents in all disciplines, but because of maladministration and corrupt practices by sports officials, the structures that produced world standard athletes in all sports have been abandoned.
Rather officials look for ready made sportsmen and women to win at international events and justify the funds given to them by the government. The country failed to qualify for the FIFA World Cup two times in a row. So did the junior national teams.
