Motorists and commuters plying the Lagos-Benin expressway were left stranded at the Ore section of the highway following excessive floods from an overflowing channel along the busy inter-state highway.
The flooding was caused by a torrential rainfall between Wednesday and Thursday. Viral online videos show vehicles and their passengers locked in a traffic standstill for several hours.
One side of the road was submerged and water flood over the concrete embarkment, while some vehicle waded through the fast-flowing water, others who could not take the risk remained root on one spot.
“We’ve been here since morning no movement everyone is stranded in Ore. The river is overflooded, it is strong enough to carry some light vehicles away,” said one of the stranded motorists.
Another stranded motorist added: “Everyone is stuck here. We need urgent government attention right now. We are on our way to Lagos from Ondo State when we saw this. The situation is terrible.”
The Ore-Benin corridor remains one of Nigeria’s most strategic transport routes, serving as a vital economic lifeline for the movement of goods, petroleum products and passengers between the South-West, South-South and South-East regions.
