Defending champions Super Falcons of Nigeria have been humble by debutants Malawi with a 3-2 stunner in their group C opening game of the Women African Cup of Nations Tuesday night at the Al Madina Stadium Rabat, Morocco.
The Scorchers as they are called, took the lead after a goalless first half in the 73rd minute with Tenwa Chawinga’s strike and they never looked back.
It was some sort of a wake up call for the Super Falcons who despite their dominance failed to find a way round Malawi defence.
Tabitha Chawinga followed her sister’s example and doubled Malawi’s lead.
Skipper Rasheedat Ajibade from the spot initiated a fight back in the 90th but Temwa Chawinga killed off the game deep in stoppage time.
In added time Uchenna Kanu’s headed goal was a little to too late to rescue a point for the Super Falcons.
They must now beat Zambia on Saturday to stand any chance of advancing to the quarter final.
Zambia recorded their biggest win in their AFCON history by thrashing Egypt 6-1 in the other group C game.
