Cameroon’s Emmanuel Eseme seems to have made a pact with a cold rainy Glasgow night at the Scotstoun Stadium as he stormed to a 9.83 seconds finish to win the 2026 Commonwealth Games men’s 100m gold.
Eseme who in May won the African Championships title in Accra, Ghana proved to be the bravest in the power packed line line up; he dusted Lachlan Kennedy who came second with an Australian record of 9.85 seconds.Race favourite Kanyinsola Ajayi who had a bad night and bad start waffled in 9.90 seconds.
Eseme’s time erased Ato Boldon’s Games record from 28 years ago in Kuala Lumpur.
South Africa’s Gift Leotlela was fourth in a time of 9.91. He was the only other man to go under 10 seconds in the rain-soaked final.
Kenya’s Ferdinand Omanyala did not advance to the finals, later telling Olympics.com that he is “really not good in the rain”.
In the women’s race New Zealand breezed to an area record of 10.93 seconds run to win the gold ahead of England’ s Amy Hunt who did 10.98 seconds. Torrie Lewis of Australia took the bronze with a time of 10.99 seconds.
