Two students of Gateway ICT Polytechnic Saapade, Ogun State have lost their lives after inhaling nitrous oxide commonly known as “laughing gas.”
The incident according to the Punch reports occurred in Isara Remo, when the deceased students and two others attempted to get high by inhaling the substance known to be highly intoxicating when inhaled in large quantities.
But unfortunately for two deceased students the substance did not make them laugh, they died while the other two were hospitalised
“The incident actually happened on Tuesday. What we learnt was that the students were taking what they called laughing gas. Two of the students died as a result of taking the hard drugs while two others were hospitalised,” a resident of the community.
Ogun State Police Command, spokesperson DSP Oluseyi Babaseyi, said the command was investigating a suspected drug-related case in the area.
He said, “The Ogun State Police Command is investigating a suspected drug-related incident at Oke-Ola Phase II, Isara-Remo, where two persons were found dead and two others were hospitalised after allegedly consuming hard drugs.
“The deceased have been deposited for autopsy, while the survivors are receiving medical treatment. Investigation is ongoing to determine the exact circumstances surrounding the incident.
“The Command warns against drug abuse and urges members of the public to avoid illicit substances.”
Nitrous oxide (N₂O), is a colorless, sweet-smelling gas used in medicine and dentistry as a mild, short-acting sedative and pain reliever. When inhaled, it creates a calming, euphoric effect and sometimes giddiness, though it is also used for recreational intoxication.
