Former England international and manager Kevin Keegan has died at 75 surrounded by his family after a long battle with cancer
“It is with immense sadness that we announce that Kevin Keegan has passed away at the age of 75,” read a family statement.
“The former England player and manager had been battling cancer and was surrounded by his wife and daughters in his final moments.
“Kevin, a double Ballon D’Or winner, was a much-loved husband, father and grandfather.
“The family would like to thank Kevin’s incredible medical team for all their support.
“This is a hugely difficult time, and they are requesting space and privacy.”
Keegan nicknamed ‘Mighty Mouse’ had a successful spell at Liverpool between 1971 and 1977, he scored 68 goals from 230 games, before joining Hamburg of Germany, he later returned to England with Southhampton after one season before joining Newcastle United in 1982. He had 204 club career goals from 592 games. He scored 21 goals from 63 games for the Three Lions. After his playering career he coached at Newcastle two spells, Fulham, and Manchester City. He managed England between 1999-2000.
He won three league championships, the European Cup, two UEFA Cups and the FA Cup in a six-year period until leaving for Hamburg in summer 1977. At Hamburg Keegan claimed back-to-back Ballon d’Or awards before returning to England.
