Nigeria’s sprint sensation Kayinsola Ajayi has proved once more he is the man to watch out for in the men’s 100m as he conjured another 9.84 seconds run Saturday at the London leg of the Diamond League.
Ajayi, 21, dusted world champion Oblique Seville of Jamaica, who clocked 9.87 seconds, while Great Britain’s Romell Glave finished third with a personal best of 9.97 seconds. Ajayi even had the luxury of staring down at his opponent.
It was the second time in a row he is besting Seville in the Diamond League and perhaps he is looking like a man who will dominate the sprint in a short time to come.
His time equals his Nigerian record and personal best.
“I just came out here and did what I had to do… I’m happy; I got the job done,” Ajayi said.
“I got out of the blocks like ‘Boom!’ I knew that if I did my start [well]… then everything was over.”
Next for the rising star is the Commonwealth Games starting in Glasgow, Scotland next week. There he is likely to face Seville and other test runners from the Commonwealth. It will be another stage perhaps to demonstrate his current form is no fluke.
“I’m doing the right things and keeping my focus. I’m really enjoying my running,” Ajayi who finished sixth at 2025 World Championship in Tokyo added.
Seville on his part said he welcomed the rivalry with Ajayi and he is looking forward to the next contest.
