Defending champions Argentina Tuesday broke English hearts with a 2-1 comeback win in the semifinals of the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
The Three Lions had gone ahead in the 55th minute with Anthony Gordon’s tap in goal after a cagey first half. But in the last quarter of the game they seemed to surrender and gave Argentina possession and captain Lionel Messi made them pay with two assists.
Enzo Fernandez levelled up in the 85th minute, and in added time Lautaro Martinez sealed England’s fate.
Argentina will now play Spain in
Sunday’s final in New Jersey.
England coach Thomas Tuchel who was criticised over his changes said: “We’re disappointed, we were so close but we got too passive after we scored and conceded a lot of chances.
“We could not turn the ball possession around and then conceded so many crosses, chances and shots. We were close but couldn’t keep the level up after we scored.
“We stayed in our 4-4-2 but we became passive, more and more passive. We couldn’t win any balls, we couldn’t keep the ball so I think it was not a structural problem, we changed nothing. But the match changed completely.”
