France was no match for Spain’s La Roja who put up a flawless display and advanced to the final of the 2026 FIFA World Cup with a 2-0 win at the Dallas Stadium.
France started well but soon lost their composure as they failed to find a way around the defending of the La Roja. Kylian Mbappe hardly took a shot at goal; his partnership with Michael Olise did not yield any breakthrough for France.
Lamine Yamal created the first big moment of the game. The winger, a day after his 19th birthday, got kicked in the box by Lucas Digne and Mikel Oyarzabal struck the resulting penalty past spot-kick-saving specialist Mike Maignan.
Spain’s advantage was doubled when Pedro Porro played a palatial one-two with Dani Olmo, taking the return impeccably and burying the ball in the bottom corner.
Didier Deschamps’ team has now lost three semi-final matches to Spain in two different competitions.
Deschamps admitted his side was outclassed.
“The players are devastated,” Deschamps said.
“But it is our fault we were technically inferior.
“The primary reason for the defeat was technical: they were superior. We made mistakes, and at this level, you pay for them, even if it hurts to say so.
“The disappointment is significant. We will play the third-place play-off, and I have no intention of throwing away all the good work we’ve done. Today, Spain showed something more.’ And France showed something less. The farewell is bitter.”
