Super Eagles coach Eric Chelle is yet to sign a new contract with the Nigeria Football Federation as Algeria and Cote d’Ivoire could offer new opportunities.
It was widely reported that the Malian-French born coach will extend his contract beyond January 2027 after being offered $100,000 per month.
National Sports Commission director-general Bukola Olapade admitted that an agreement has not been reached between the NFF and coach Eric Chelle, but hopefully they expect him to stay with the Super Eagles in the face of interests from other countries.
“Details of the contract are still being worked out, but in the long run things would be sorted and I hope that Eric Chelle will honour his gentleman agreement to continue as coach of the Super Eagles,” said Hon. Olapade.
Coach Eric Chelle was hired by the NFF in 2025 in the heat of Nigeria’s struggle to qualify for the 2026 World Cup, with four games to go. He had a mandate to get the Super Eagles to the world football fiesta which has entered its semi-final stages, but he failed to do so. He blamed Congo DR voodoo for stoping his players during the play-offs.
In January he led the Super Eagles to a third place finish in the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations.
According to former Super Eagles coach Jo Bonfere, Chelle should have been rewarded with a new contract since he failed to win the AFCON and qualify the team for the World Cup.
