England romped into the quarter final of the 2026 FIFA World Cup with a stunning 3-2 defeat of co-hosts Mexico in their fortress Aztec Stadium, Mexico City.
Jude Bellingham gave the Three Lions a dream start with quick goals in the 36th and 38th minutes leaving the Mexican players and their fans shell shocked, however, just before the break Julian Quinones pulled one back for Mexico.
England were reduced to ten men when Jarell Quansah was given the marching orders in the 54th minute forcing them into a defensive shell. But Harry Kane added England’s third goal from the spot to revive their resolve.
Mexico responded with Raul Jimenez’s goal from the spot in the 69th minute after Kane fouled in the box. But for the rest of the game England according to Kane had a “Wonderwall” that held on till the last blast of the whistle.
“It was a crazy game,” said Kane, smiling as he struggled to get his words out. “We had to find something… We found a way. We had incredible, unbelievable support from the fans. I’m speechless.
“Every individual player had to dig deep and find something deep within themselves to get us through.
“There were so many heroes out there. I’m just so proud of the team and the way they fought. We found a way to get through it together. What a special night.
“There’s no bigger test than being here, away from home, against Mexico, and having to fight through so many adversities. It just brings you closer together – more memories, more feelings, more emotions.”
Miami Stadium will stage England’s quarter-final clash with Norway on Saturday, 11 July. Stale Solbakken’s side progressed to the last eight with a stunning 2-1 victory over Brazil, with superstar striker Erling Haaland scoring a brace.
