Ahead of the round of 16 clash against 2026 FIFA World Cup cohosts Mexico, England coach Thomas Tuchel has denied his players have been using sex performance enhancing drug Viagra to train in order to beat high altitude side effects.
England will play Mexico on Monday at the Azteca Stadium, which is 2,200 m above sea level and this venue has always been viewed as an advantage to the home team. Coach Tuchel had raised concerns about the condition and wished that his team had ten days of training rather than the two days.
When asked Sunday if Three Lions would turn to Viagra used to treat erectile dysfunction and boost sex performance, Tuchel stated: “That is not true.”
He added that his players are already feel the effect.
“We feel it, even if we don’t train. I felt a slight headache and in the hotel room through the day, didn’t sleep as well as the days before.
“It’s nothing that you cannot handle and cannot adapt (to), the players felt it in the first minutes of the training session and the longer it went they could cope with it better.”
A World Anti-Doping Agency project previously examined the impact of Viagra in helping athletes at altitude, after performance was found to have been improved in over 35 per cent of athletes when above 3,800m.
