South African anti-migrants’ groups are set for Tuesday’s “March and March” and “Operation Dudula” protests urging Black African migrants to leave their country.
South African President Cyril Ramaphosa who has been accused of not doing enough to stop violent attacks on African migrants said Monday even as his government was against illegal migration, acts of violence would not be condoned.
“The right to protest is enshrined in our Constitution. It is a credit to our robust democratic order that people are able to express their grievances openly. But the right to protest and freedom of expression does not allow people to threaten or intimidate others, or to engage in acts of vandalism or violence.”
The anti-migrant group had given African migrants a June 30 deadline to leave. While the group March and March insists it’s only undocumented migrants, its ally Operation Dudula wants all migrants documented or undocumented to leave.
“Freedom comes with responsibility. The right to protest is one of the defining freedoms of our democracy, but every right carries corresponding responsibilities. Where there is criminal conduct, those responsible will be held accountable and the law will take its course,” Ramaphosa added.
Several Africans countries whose citizens have been affected have been evacuating their citizens wishing to leave. The include Malawi, Zimbabwe, Mozambique, Nigeria and Ghana.
Last weekend a Ugandan citizen was beaten to death by riotous mobs, forcing Ugandan President to order an evacuation of its citizens.
