Nigerians took to the streets Friday to mark the 2026 “Democracy Day” with protests against insecurity and President Bola Tinubu’s economic policies that have brought unending hardships.
In Abuja, Lagos and other major cities across Nigeria, demonstrators call for an end to bad governance and insecurity in the country. But the protests turned violent in Abuja, where security agents fired teargas at marchers led by political and human right activist Omoleye Sowore as he led the march towards the Eagles Square.
In Lagos human right lawyer Femi Falana SAN and his rap artist son, Folarin Falana a.k.a Falz led a group of demonstrators including trade unions, youth groups, and other activists in protests across Lagos
Falz criticized the attacks on educational institutions, questioning why schools remain open while students continue to face the threat of abduction.
Demonstrators carried placards reading “Free All Captives Now,” “End Anti-People Policies Now,” and “For a Living Wage and Mass Creation of Employment.” Some who spoke to our correspondent said the government needs to address the issue of poverty, inflation and high cost of living being faced by Nigerians.
