Women tennis legend Serena Williams has ended her quest to make a comeback at Wimbledon tournament after doubles partner Victoria Mboko suffered a knee injury at the HSBC Championships.
Serena Williams and Mboko were scheduled to have a go at the Queen’s Club doubles title, but the Congo DR-Canadian player hurt her knee during Wednesday’s singles tie against Karolina Pliskova with the scores 6-2 3-4, ending Mboko’s campaign in London.
In the first-round Williams and Mboko had breezed to a 7-6 (7-2) 6-2 victory over third-seeded duo Nicole Melichar-Martinez and Erin Routliffe in the former’s first appearance since the 2022 US Open.
The pair were scheduled to face Canadian Layla Fernandez and German Laura Siegemund in the second round of the double’s tournament on Friday, but Mboko’s injury means that the match will not take place and their tournament is over.
“What a fun and memorable week at the HSBC Championships. Thank you to everyone who made it so special,” Williams posted on Instagram.
“Vicky Mboko, you’re an incredible talent and you’ll be back out there in no time.
“Wishing you a speedy recovery.”
The HSBC Championships is a warmup event for the Wimbledon tournament, which begins on June 29.
