Former Nollywood actor turned politician Kenneth Okonkwo is poised for a legal battle with his former political ally Peter Obi.
Mr. Obi, a presidential aspirant for the 2027 election, alleged that Okonkwo lied against him when he claimed that Obi and the Nigeria Democratic Congress collected N10m from House of Representative aspirants.
But one of the aspirants Okonkwo mentioned while he was making the allegations, Obunike Ohaegbu denied ever paying N10m to Obi or to any NDC official.
“I am telling you that Peter Obi never told me to pay N10 million. I never told Kenneth Okonkwo that Peter Obi, in any way, told me to pay N10 million,” Ohaegbu said during an interview on Channels TV.
Obi accused Okonkwo of making false allegations which are damaging against him. According to a notice of litigation letter sent by Obi’s lawyer Alex Ejesieme (SAN), Okonkwo before the eyes of the public portrayed him as a bribe collector, fraudster and dishonest political actor involved in criminal activities.
Adding also that Okonkwo was deliberately seeking to expose him to public hatred, contempt and ridicule.
Obi demanded the payment of N5 billion as general, aggravated and exemplary damages for the alleged harm caused to his reputation, as well as a written undertaking that no similar statements would be made in the future.
According to Obi, failure to comply with the demands would leave him with no option but to seek legal redress, including claims for damages, injunctive reliefs, public retraction, apology and the full cost of legal proceedings.
However, Okonkwo writing on his X social media platform dared Obi to take him to court.
“I have not read the letter. Let me sound this note of warning, the lawyers must take responsibility for any information I may have to divulge, which I acquired as a spokesperson, but which by my conscience I have not shared with anyone.
“Anyone who decides to sue his former spokesperson for defamation is indeed very unwise.
“I will reply to the letter whenever I have the time to read it later in the day. Please send it here if you have it. It will be a shame to Peter Obi and his lawyers if they do not take this case to court.”
