A girl who didn’t want to go to school caused chaos in Osun State Tuesday, when she dropped a letter purportedly written by bandits, informing her school they were coming to town to kidnap students.
The rumours quickly spread in the Ikirun and Ila communities causing panic and forcing a shutdown of public and private schools in the area. Soon the panic spread to other communities like Obaagun, Iree, Eripa, Otan Ayegbaju in Boluwaduro Local Government and Ila-Orangun in Ila Local Government.
Schools in Osogbo, Ede, Boripe, Odo Otin in Olorunda Local Government Area, closed their doors at about 11am.
Students of the Community Second Grammar School, Obaagun, NUD in Iree, Kidvarc in Iree, Baptist Day School, Iree, Eripa, Otan-Ayegbaju, Ila-Orangun, and many other schools in Osogbo and Owode Ede were seen scampering back to their homes.
Following the widespread fear the girl in question went into hiding it was gathered.
Osun State governor Ademola Adeleke responding to the rumours urged residents to remain calm and ignored the false alarm.
Adeleke added that “the Ministry of Education and the relevant security agencies have worked out a security strategy that is being implemented.”
According to him, the state’s Armoured Personnel Carriers have been fully refurbished and ready for deployment to deal with any security threats.
