After arriving in Accra, Ghana Monday and having light warmups in the evening, Nigerian athletes and coaches said they are ready to meet up with expectations as the CAA African Championships begin Tuesday.
The team made up of youth and experienced athletes, according to the coaches are in high spirits and in one accord to deliver in what Athletics Federation of Nigeria officials believe will set the tone for the Commonwealth Games later in July.
For some of the junior athletes in the team this is one opportunity to announce themselves to global athletics even as they gave a hint of their true potentials at the recent World Relays in Botswana.
One of such athletes is Miracle Ezechukwu who is competing in the women 100m, 200m and relays. She was in the team that helped Nigeria 4x100m mixed team to qualify for the World Championships next year in China.
“My main aim is to clinch the 100m gold and then of course the 4x100m women, the mixed relay and also leave Accra with a new personal best.
“We are happy here; the team spirit is high, and we are looking forward to the competition,” said Ezechukwu.
Also coach Gabriel Opuana who is in town with his team of throwers, stated that every athlete here in Accra is in good shape and in good mentality to compete.
“There are no worries in camp, all the athletes are happy and are eager to do all they can to ensure they perform in the team and individual events.
“The runners, jumpers and throwers everybody is saying the same, get a good result,”
