Gunmen who kidnapped 15 worshippers in Ilejemeje, Ekiti State, have demanded for a ransom of N1 billion to secure their release.
The gunmen on Tuesday invaded the Christ Apostolic Church, located at 2, Eda-Oniyo, Ilejemeje LGA of Ekiti, during an evening service. A pastor was shot dead and the 15 victims taken away.
The traditional ruler of the community, the Eleda of Eda Oniyo, Oba Julius Oladipo Owodola describing the incident as unfortunate and disturbing, he confirmed that the gunmen are asking for N1 billion for the release of the victims.
Ekiti State Commissioner of Police, Michael Falade, who visited the community ordered the immediate deployment of a joint security team comprising police officers, military personnel, and other security operatives for coordinated bush-combing operations.
Falade assured residents that security agencies were working tirelessly to ensure the safe rescue of all abducted victims.
“We will do everything within our capacity to ensure those kidnapped are rescued alive and reunited with their families,” he said during the visit.
He appealed to both the state and federal governments to strengthen security architecture in the community and surrounding areas, which residents say have become increasingly vulnerable to attacks.
