Former Super Eagles striker Michael Eneramo has slumped and died while being involved in a novelty match in Ungwan Yelwa Kaduna State on Friday.
The 39-years-old Eneramo according to witness suddenly collapsed five minutes into the second half of the game, despite efforts at reviving him, he never recovered.
“This is devastating. I am short of words at this moment. I can only pray that God will grant him eternal rest and also grant his loved ones and the Nigeria football family the fortitude to bear the loss,” said Nigeria Football Federation (NFF), secetary-general Mohammed Sanusi.
The Kaduna born Eneramo made his debut for the Super Eagles in 2009 during a friendly with Ireland in London. In that match he scored the first of his three goals in 10 appearances for the national team.
Eneramo played a key role in Nigeria’s 2010 FIFA World Cup qualifying campaign, including appearances against Kenya and Tunisia. His most memorable moment came in a 2-2 draw against Tunisia in Abuja on September 6, 2009, where he found scored.
After enjoying a spell with the youth team of Lobi Stars of Benue State, he joined Esperance Sportive de Tunis, where he became a fan favourite and earned the nickname “Al Dababa” (The Tank).
He also played in Turkey for clubs like Sivasspor, Beşiktaş, Karabükspor, Istanbul Başakşehir, and Manisaspor.
