The government of Keir Starmer said they have their eyes on the 2027 general elections in Nigeria.
According to a Labour Party member of Parliament, the British government would support a credible, transparent and inclusive democratic process in the country.
Chris Elmore, Labour MP for Bridgend and Porthcawl, said in a response to a question on how the British government is preparing for the elections said: “We are closely monitoring preparations for Nigeria’s 2027 presidential elections. Our High Commission in Abuja will, as in previous elections, deploy observation teams across the country, working alongside international partners and Nigerian civil society organisations.
“We will continue to engage with the Independent National Electoral Commission and civil society partners to support initiatives that strengthen a credible, transparent and inclusive electoral process,” said Mr Elmore.
Meanwhile, the Independent National Electoral Commission has fixed the presidential and national parliamentary elections for January 16, 2027.
The electoral body also announced that the governorship and state parliamentary elections will be held on February 6, 2027.
Party primaries, including the resolution of disputes arising from primaries, are expected to commence on April 23 and end on May 30.
Presidential and National Assembly campaigns will commence on August 19, while governorship and state assembly campaigns will commence on September 9.
