Confederation of African Football president Patrice Motsepe said he is open to any investigation of corruption in the continental football ruling body.
CAF came under scrutiny following the chaotic 2025 African Cup of Nations hosted by Morocco. Speaking in Dakar, Senegal where he is on a fence mending mission, Motsepe said he would gladly encourage countries or organisations who are ready to investigate the alleged corruption in CAF.
At the AFCON there were glaring cases of bias officiating, a malady, which almost ruined the final between the hosts and Senegal. CAF Appeal Board shocked the world of football in March when it overturned the verdict of the CAF disciplinary committee on a petition filed by Morocco claiming Senegal walked off the pitch in the final. Senegal was stripped of the title and Morocco were crown champions instead.
“I welcome any investigation [into corruption at CAF], whether it is by a government or an authority or anybody,” Motsepe said at a news conference in Dakar.
“Because any corruption in CAF we want to know about it and we will take action ourselves, immediately.
“We have a duty to our people in Africa. If any government or institution [wants to], please go ahead, conduct the investigation.
“We will give you all the co-operation. In fact, I encourage you.
“Whilst I am president of Caf we will never conceal any corruption,” he added.
“It is the biggest problem, not just in football. I have been told there have been lots of problems in the past [with corruption] and we intervened.
“We can’t set a bad example in football, to give our children the perception that if you want to succeed in life, be corrupt.
“That’s the best gift we can give football in Africa. Not just talking about corruption, but intervene, put the necessary laws [in place] and implement them.”
Speaking on the controversial stripping of Senegal Motsepe said the matter was now before the Court of Arbitration for Sports. He said CAF will abide with whatever decision taken by the sports court.
Motsepe is expected to meet Moroccan government and football officials next in Rabat.
