A 15 years-old boy identified as Gift Oberhirhi has died after swallowing 15 tablets of Dexamethasone a controlled drug.
According to the Delta State Police Command Spokesperson Bright Edafe, the incident occurred in Orogun Community in Ughelli North Local Government. He said the highly potent drug used to reduce inflammation and suppress the immune system was supply Oberhirhi’s friend Destiny Akpofure who is also 15 years old.
After ingesting the drug Oberhirhi fell critically ill and died before he could get to the hospital for treatment. The corpse was deposited in the morgue awaiting autopsy, while the other lad was reminded in police custody.
According to Edafe the incident was a grim reminder of the drug use menace by youths in the state. He said police intelligence-led operations is targeting drug dens, blackspots, and criminal hideouts across the state.
Dexamethasone is a potent, long-acting corticosteroid is used to reduce inflammation and suppress the immune system. It treats conditions like severe allergies, asthma, arthritis, skin diseases, autoimmune disorders, and cancer (e.g., multiple myeloma), and reduces severe COVID-19 symptoms. Common side effects include high blood sugar, weight gain, insomnia, and mood changes.
