The March 2026 edition of the “Elders Forum by O’jez” turned out to be one of the best and most informative in the series of the entertaining monthly package so far.
Renowned medical practitioner Dr. Tuyi Mebawondu was the big fish in the pond on March 29 at the O’jez Sports Lounge National Stadium Surulere Lagos. It was the first time in a long while the “Elders Forum” would be hosting a professional outside the entertainment industry.
And it was a worthwhile evening the guest, his entourage and the organisers would treasure for a long time, the atmosphere was joyous with music, food and drinks in abundant supply.
Once the meet and greet was over chief host Mr. Effiong Nyong welcomed the illustrious guest to the stage.
When he began to speak the audience listened with rapt attention. Dr Mebwondu talked about his humble beginnings and the main inspiration for his medical odyssey and it was quite exhilarating and at the same time awe inspiring.
“In my secondary school days in Ijebu Igbo, I was told that my father was sick and he died and that was the turning point…I asked myself why should my father die unceremoniously and so I choose to do medicine and surgery instead.
“I was 16 when I entered the University of Ife and in all my study years I made a pledge to do everything I can to make people healthy,” Dr. Mebawondu stated.
He harped on the importance of living a healthy life and also getting the right information at the right time to tackle whatever illness that may be affecting individuals. He noted that it is vital for people to know that medical care can cure illnesses even as people of faith would rather depend on fasting and praying.
“I was speaking to members of a popular church recently and I was like, if your leaders have jaundice for instance, they wouldn’t be at the altar preaching.
“When a child or an adult is sick it is important that they come to the hospital on time.”
Dr. Mebawondu also cautioned Nigerians to be wary of health tips social media influencers bombard them with.
“It is the toughest thing medical care is facing…misinformation. People on social media want to get clicks, likes and shares. This is what is trending.
“But people need to check on google or ask their doctors if the information is correct.
“I have made it known to the government that the most effective way to get good medicare is to dispense the right information. No matter how well the process is, once you have the wrong information spreading, this becomes a problem.
“We need to spread health information, health communication and try as much as possible to discourage wrong information.”
At the end of the talk session Dr Mebawondu was honoured with a commemorative plaque, presented to him by Mr. Joseph Odobeatu the chairman and managing director of the O’jez entertainment group.
“I’m highly honoured by the recognition given to me by the 0’jez entertainment group. It is important to note that this is the first time a medical practitioner would be so honoured by those in entertainment,” Dr. Mebawondu stated.
