A cleric linked to the Islamic State West Africa Province (ISWAP) has warned of a possible attack to avenge the killing of its fighters by the Nigerian military recently in Malam Fatori in Borno State.
According to security expert, Zagazola Makama, the cleric made the threats during the Eid-el-Fitr prayers in a location near Sabon Tumbu.
Makama revealed that the cleric, during his sermon, vowed that the group would retaliate for recent military operations carried out in Malam Fatori.
“The cleric specifically threatened that the town could be ‘reduced to ashes’ in a reprisal attack,” said Makama quoting military sources.
The development follows the neutralisation of about 75 terrorists during a failed attack on March 18, 2026.
Security sources cautioned that such statements should not be dismissed lightly, noting that insurgent groups often follow through on threats issued publicly.
Malam Fatori, a border town in Borno State, has long been regarded as a symbol of military resilience against insurgent groups.
Over the years, the town has witnessed several successful operations by Nigerian troops against ISWAP fighters, earning it the nickname “Graveyard of ISWAP.”
The difficult terrain and sustained military presence have made it a challenging location for insurgents to establish control.
In response to the latest threat, military authorities have reportedly intensified surveillance and reinforced defensive positions in and around the town.
Troops of the Armed Forces, supported by other security agencies, are said to be on high alert to prevent any attempted incursion.
Security experts have urged residents to remain vigilant and cooperate with authorities, stressing the need for proactive measures in the face of evolving threats.
