16.3.2026

The Iranian national team are still keen to compete at the FIFA 2026 World Cup in the USA, Canada and Mexico despite the on-going conflict between the Islamic Republic country and the US.
US President Donald Trump had warned that the Iranian team would not be welcome to his country for their “for their own life and safety.” But Iran government officials insisted that the World Cup does not belong to the USA and its team will participate if they want to.
The Iranians have not made known their final decision on the matter. But Asian Football Confederation president, Windsor John insists the Iranian’s are still set to compete.
Speaking in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, John said: “It’s a very emotional moment. Everybody’s saying a lot of things. At the end of the day, it’s the federation who should decide if they’re playing, and as of today, the federation has told us that they are going to the World Cup.
“They are our member, we want them to play. You know, they qualified … so we hope that they will solve their issues, whatever it is, and be able to participate.”
