As President Bola Tinubu prepares to visit the United Kingdom at the invitation of King Charles this week, some members of the UK Parliament have asked Prime Minister Keir Starmer to ask tough question from his Nigerian counterpart.
The questions that need answers from President Tinubu according to the lawmakers including the alleged killing of Christians in some Nigerian communities. According to reports by the Daily Mail a group of 209 MPs and peers expressed concern that the Nigerian state had failed to treat the attacks with the required seriousness.
The MPs from the All-Party Parliamentary Group for Freedom of Religion or Belief (APPG FoRB) wrote to the Development Minister, Baroness Jenny Chapman, urging the UK government to put more pressure on Tinubu protect human rights Nigeria.
“Nigeria must take concrete steps to prevent the harassment, persecution and killing of Christians, while ensuring that perpetrators are investigated and prosecuted,” said the statement signed by the group leader MP Jim Shannon of the Democratic Unionist Party (DUP)
President Tinubu, who will be accompanied by his wife, Oluremi, will be hosted by the King and Queen at Windsor Castle on Wednesday, where they will attend a state banquet as guests of honour.
Tinubu will then travel to Downing Street to meet with Prime Minister Starmer on Thursday, marking the first state visit by a Nigerian president in 37 years.
