In the coming days the country could be plunge into blackouts as gas suppliers are threatening to cut supply to power generating companies due to outstanding debts.
Association of Power Generation Companies CEO Dr. Joy Ogaji urged Nigerians to brace up for blackouts as suppliers are poised to halt deliveries until the N3.3 trillion owed them is paid. She noted that the situation is complicated as the Power Generation Companies are unable to pay up because the Federal government owes them ₦6.8 trillion as of February 2026.
She stated Nigeria’s electricity generation is currently under severe strain because thermal power plants, which rely heavily on gas supply, are struggling to obtain enough fuel to operate.
She explained that the national grid was only able to generate about 3,334 megawatts of electricity as of Wednesday, largely due to insufficient gas supply.
“Gas is not available because the gas suppliers have told us that if we need gas, we need to put money on the ground to get gas in the pipe. We owe them a lot of money,” Ogaji said.
However, Minister of Power, Adebayo Adelabu, said the Federal Government was already working to address the problem. Adelabu spoke through his spokesperson, Bolaji Tunji.
Tunji said the issue was being handled in collaboration with the Minister of State for Petroleum (Gas), Ekperikpe Ekpo.
“It is being handled jointly with the Minister of State for Petroleum (Gas),” Tunji said in a brief response.
