Confederation of African Football (CAF) has postponed the 2026 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations, throwing the spanner in the works of teams that have been preparing for the tournament originally billed for March 17-April 3 in Morocco.
CAF said in a statement Thursday that the WAFCON will now be decided between July 25 and August 16, 2026. It did not state whether the tournament would still hold in Morocco or move to another venue.
“After discussions between CAF, FIFA and other partners, it was agreed that the tournament be moved to July–August to ensure the success of the competition,” the statement said.
South Africa Football Federation said it was prepared to host if Morocco failed to honour its pledge.
In recent weeks, concerns had quietly grown around preparations for the event, with issues such as venue confirmations for the knockout rounds, accreditation for journalists and officials, and technical workshops yet to be finalised. Promotional activities around the competition were also still limited.
Defending champions Super Falcons of Nigeria, and other teams will have more time to prepred, but concerns have been raised about funds and energy already wasted. Nigeria and Cameroon recently played warm up marches in Yaoundé.
