Despite the ongoing strike by the Nigeria Union of Petroleum and Natural Gas Workers (NUPENG), the Dangote refinery has assured Nigerians of adequate fuel supply.
NUPENG and Dangote are at loggerheads following the company’s refusal to allow truck drivers participate in Union activities. NUPENG embarked on strike Monday and attempts by the Federal government to broker a deal failed Tuesday.
“There is no fuel shortage, everything is going on,” Dangote refinery spokesman, Anthony Chiejina, said.
Meanwhile NUPENG said it would continue with the strike as long as Dangote refuses to allow union activities and pursue monopolistic agenda.
“The strike is still on. We started yesterday. As it is, we are still open to dialogue. Discussions are also going on. But the strike is still on. We started the strike yesterday. Now, we have been told that we should slow down on the strike,” said NUPENG president, Williams Akporeha,
“We thought that yesterday’s meeting would just be a one-day affair, and we’d all go back. But what we saw yesterday should tell Nigerians that we are in for a dictator investor, and we must stand up against that. So, the strike continues anyway. But I’m hopeful that a good reason will prevail, and the issue will be resolved as quickly as possible.”
“What Dangote has shown over time is that he’s not prepared to have workers that will have a say in his employment.
Chiejina, denied the claim that its drivers were not being allowed to join a union, calling it “cheap blackmail”.
“It’s not true… nobody has done that, and nobody has ever,” he said.
