Nigeria Labour Congress president, Joe Ajearo was picked up by the Department of the State Service agents Monday morning at the Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport, Abuja.
No statement has been issued by the DSS on Mr. Ajaero’s arrest. He was on his way to the UK to attend the Trade Union Congress conference in London.
Ajaero was invited by the police in August for questioning on allegations of terrorism financing, he honoured the invitation but was not charged with any crime.
Ajaero has vehemently opposed President Bola Tinubu economic policies which has left many Nigerians on the brink of poverty.
Reacting on the arrest the NLC said on its X page: “The assault on Nigerian workers continues.
“President of the NLC, Joe Ajaero, was arrested and abducted by men of the DSS at the Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport, Abuja, this morning on his way to attend an official engagement of TUC United Kingdom, and he is now detained at the office of the NSA.
Meanwhile, the offices of Socio-Economic Rights and Accountability Project, SERAP is being occupied by the DSS in Abuja.
According to a post on SERAP’s X page: “Officers from Nigeria’s State Security Service (DSS) are presently unlawfully occupying SERAP’s office in Abuja, asking to see our directors.
“President Tinubu must immediately direct the DSS to end the harassment, intimidation, and attack on the rights of Nigerians.”
