Kano State Hisbah Board’s arrest and prosecution of TikToker Amani Ishaq and two other ladies have been faulted by Feminist Digital Watch a women’s advocacy group.
Amani Ishaq and the others were arrested on October 24 and arraigned before Magistrate Court No. 5, Court Road, Kano for allegedly contravening public morality and religious guidelines. The Hisbah Board has not publicly confirmed if the ladies were remanded in custody or granted bail.
The feminist group said in a statement signed Evelyn Ugbe Tuesday in Abuja that it was troubling how women are been prevented from expressing themselves on digital spaces.
“Across Nigeria’s digital ecosystem, women creators consistently face disproportionate scrutiny, online mobbing, and state-backed censorship for routine digital expression that is widely normalised for men,
“The Amani Ishaq case is a troubling escalation in the systemic surveillance and criminalization of women’s creative self-expression in digital spaces.”
The group added that the Kano Hisbah Board morality laws contravene Nigeria’s Section 39 of the 1999 Constitution (as amended) which guarantees freedom of expression and Nigeria’s obligations under the Maputo Protocol.
Feminist Digital Watch said it would be mobilising legal-defense partners and civil society networks to track abuse of women and girls in Kano and elsewhere.
