A team of security forces prevented a planned “mega march” for Nigeria Democratic Congress presidential candidate Peter Obi and his running mate Senator Rabiu Kwankwaso on Saturday.
A heavy presence of the Nigeria army, Police, Department of State Services and the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps were seen at the Abuja City Gate with their trucks and vans. Attempts by the marchers to converged at the spot were thwarted by the security agents.
One of the organisers of the “mega march” Saint Samson told journalists that marchers were prevented from gathering at Unity Fountain.
“We got to Unity Fountain, but there was a security presence when we arrived, and some of our members were repelled from converging. We have decided to move to another location,” Samson said.
“What we want to do is to mobilise support and campaign for the candidates of our party, as the constitution requires us to do, and gather to tell Nigerians what we have for them.”
He added that the march was not intended to cause any violence or anti-government sloganeering, but a peaceful gathering to send the NDC candidate’s political message.
“We are not against the government or attacking the government, so sending security to chase us and attack us is not democracy.
“We don’t want any casualties, so we are putting our men together. We are not violent people; we are not aggressive.”
