Individuals and groups who gathered Tuesday to commemorate the 6th anniversary of the October 2020 #EndSARS protests were teargassed by the Nigeria police at the Lekki Tollgate, Lagos.
Sympathisers of the #EndSARS movement, residents of Lekki joined by African Democratic Congress governorship candidate, Gbadebo Rhodes-Vivour, his Nigeria Democratic Congress counterpart Funso Doherty and journalists had gathered the tollgate where hundreds of protesters were shot at by the Nigeria army in 2020 leaving nine persons dead and four others remain missing till date.

Nigeria police officers…spray teargas at peaceful marchers.

Some of the victims include Victor Sunday Ibanga, Abuta Solomon, Jide, Olalekan Abideen Ashafa, Olamilekan Ajasa, Kolade Salami, Folorunsho Olabisi, Kenechukwu Ugoh and Nathaniel Solomon.
In videos circulating on-line Rhodes-Vivour and Dorherty were seen laying wreaths in memory of the victims but shortly afterwards the police arrived and gassed the scene. This forced the organisers “Enough is Enough,” residents, journalists and other participants into a retreat.
Some participants sustained injuries, while others struggled to breathe amid the tear gas.
The disruption also caused traffic to build up along the busy expressway.
The organisers had brought 15 wreaths to the venue to honour those who died during the protests, including Pelumi Onifade, a journalist who was shot dead in Lagos during the nationwide demonstrations.
The Lekki incident remains one of the most contentious episodes of the protests. It attracted international attention and intensified calls for accountability over the use of force by security agencies.
However, the Lekki tollgate shooting and the circumstances surrounding deaths and injuries during the protests have continued to fuel demands for justice and accountability.
