Nigerian singer Abiye Jumbo a.k.a Mr 2Kay, said he left his former record company because they short changed him of a compensation he received after been beaten and robbed at the Eko Hotels in Lagos.
Mr. 2Kay said in a chat with Yanga FM Lagos that he was paid N10m but the label owners gave only N2 million. In 2017 fellow artist Burna Boy allegedly sent thugs to beat Mr. 2Kay while at the Eko Hotels premises. He was also robbed after being assaulted by the armed men.
“When Burna Boy sent boys to beat me up in Eko Hotel, the boys attacked me and ended up robbing me. Eko Hotel later compensated me with N10 million but my record label gave me only N2 million out of it. So, I left the record label,” he said.
The attack generated widespread reactions within the Nigerian music industry, particularly after the Lagos State Police Command launched an investigation into the circumstances surrounding the incident.
Four suspects were arrested, including Joel Kantiok, identified in reports as Burna Boy’s road manager.
According to reports on the police investigation, the suspects confessed during interrogation that they had been hired and paid by Burna Boy to teach Mr 2Kay a lesson. The allegations formed part of the controversy that followed the attack.
Burna Boy was arraigned in court on charges of assault, however, both artists settled out of court.
