Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) has rejected the decision of the Confederation of African Football (CAF) to cancel the result of the September 5 WAFU B CAF Women Champions League qualification tournament final won 4-1 on penalty shootout by Edo Queens of Benin City.
Based on a protested by the Ghana Football Association on behalf of the Ampen Darkoa Ladies, CAF women committee had demanded that the extra time of the match, which was cancelled by the match referee must be played. The Ghanaian club had argued that not playing the extra time before going into penalty shootout contravened the rules of the game.
The committee upheld the protest saying both teams must head back to Ouagadougou, Burkina Faso at the expense of WAFU B to play the extra-time. The winner of the game will qualify to represent the WAFU B zone in the CAF Women Champions League.
But according to the NFF in its letter of appeal filed on Tuesday, Edo Queens must not suffer for the mistakes of the match officials who called off the extra-time since they were ready to play.
“Edo Queens neither elected nor requested that extra time be dispensed with.
“The fact that Edo Queens ultimately won the shoot-out cannot retrospectively convert its compliance with the referee’s instruction into responsibility for the regulatory breach.”
According to the NFF there has never been any justified precedent for canceling a completed shoot-out and reopening a finalized match, especially when neither participating team was responsible for the procedural blunder.
