Nigeria Democratic Congress presidential candidate in the 2027 election, Peter Obi has applauded the manner Ghana’s President John Mahama carried himself at the United Nations General Assembly in New York, USA recently.
Obi writing on his X social media platform Sunday reflected that Mr. Mahama made his country and Africa proud with his speech, observing that such leader with a presence was what Nigeria needed.
President Bola Tinubu for three years running has not attended the UNGA. Vice President Kassim Shettima stood in for President Tinubu who was in Paris France on medical vacation.
“The dynamic President of Ghana, John Dramani Mahama, delivered a remarkable address at the 81st United Nations General Assembly. The international community has commended his leadership and the substance of his address,” Obi stated
“It is a reminder of what leadership can produce when competence, capacity, compassion, commitment and character come together in the service of a nation.”
“Meanwhile where is the President of Africa’s most populous nation, a country of more than 200 million people – more than Ghana – whose leader has been absent from the global stage for three consecutive UNGAs?”
Obi said Nigeria ought to have been providing leadership for Africa, but over the years the country has been weak on international relations and diplomacy.
“Nigeria’s President, who ought to be representing the country and providing leadership for Africa at the international level, has not attended any of these three global gatherings.
“Where is he, particularly at a time when the country faces significant challenges, both domestically and internationally?”
