One of Nigeria’s best known actors Olu Jacobs has died at 84.
Jacobs had battled with illness for a long time, and it was rumoured in recent times he passed on. However, on Wednesday his family confirmed that he has taken his final bow.
“It is with gratitude to God for a life well lived and fought, that we announce the passing of our dear husband, father, grandfather and uncle. The Lion of Lufodo.”
“Oludotun Baiyewun Jacobs (MFR). 11/07/ 1942- 16/09/2026. We call on all bloggers and social media influencers to respect our family’s privacy at this time,” his son Olusoji announced on Instagram.
Before returning to Nigeria Jacobs starred in several British sitcoms and international films. He established himself as an icon in Nollywood appearing in over 100 movies. He was inspired into acting by late Herbert Ogunde and travelling drama group, before travelling to England to study the trade.
Jacobs trained at The Royal Academy of Dramatic Arts in London. One of his earliest stage roles was to play the part of The Boy in ‘A Taste of Honey’ at the newly opened Crucible Theatre in Sheffield, in 1972. He then appeared in various British television shows and series in the 1970s (including The Goodies, Till Death Us Do Part, Barlow at Large, The Venturers, Angels, 1990, The Tomorrow People and The Professionals).
He was born to parents from Egba Alake in Ogun State, he spent his early childhood in Kano. He attended Holy Trinity School where he was a member of the debating and drama societies.
