Famous Nigerian author Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie said she wouldn’t be back to her fatherland for a long time following the sudden death of her son at medical facility in Lagos.
One of her 21-month-old twin sons, Nkanu had suffered some complications while being treated by the Eurocare hospital and according to Adichie the doctors admitted negligent by administering a drug propofol in excess, causing the little boy to suffer cardiac arrest in November 2025.
“My feelings toward Nigeria have changed,” she told The New York Times in an interview.
“I do not want to go back to Nigeria.”
“I mean, it is so surreal, all of this. I still can’t believe we’re talking about my son who died,”
“You’re going through something, but you also feel like you’re outside of it.”
Recalling the incident, Adichie said a doctor approached her in a state of panic after the procedure.
“He was very calm and he said to me, ‘Well, look, they gave him too much Propofol.’ Those were his exact words, which I will never forget until the day I die,” Adichie added.
Meanwhile Eurocare did not accept any wrongdoing especially when the boy had earlier been given antibiotics by his father, it requested for an autopsy report, which the Adichie family was reluctant to go through with. Euracare accused Adichie and her husband of destroying evidence by cremating their son’s remains.
