An angry mob of worshipers have beaten a man identified as Mai Barewa to death after he attacked an Islamic cleric, Malam Musa Lukwa, who led Friday’s Juma’at prayer at his mosque in Mabera area of Sokoto.
The deceased who had earlier threatened to kill the cleric had sat with other worshipers in the mosque and after the service jumped on Lukwa stabbing him twice on the neck. He was promptly tackled by other worshipers before he could deliver a fatal blow, there after he was savagely beaten to death.
According to reports by Daily Trust the deceased had been offended by a previous sermon delivered by the cleric, a sermon considered by Muslims of the Tariqa order, as offensive to the parents of Prophet Muhammad.
Sokoto State police spokesperson DSP Ahmad Rufa’i, confirmed the incident saying Malam Lukwa was receiving treatment at the Specialist Hospital, Sokoto.
He said the command was investigating the incident to establish the circumstances surrounding the attack and identify anyone who might have been involved.
