Nigeria’s D’Tigress finally got the promised $100,000 to each player of Nigeria’s senior women’s basketball team made by President Bola Tinubu for winning the 2025 FIBA Women’s Afrobasket.
Their coaches also got $50,000 each for their role in gingering the team to victory. D’Tigress won the 2025 FIBA Women’s Afrobasket title, securing their fifth consecutive championship and seventh title overall.
National Sports Commission officials confirmed that the naira equivalent of the sums were paid, and the players and coaches have received their money.
NSC director of information and publicity Kehinde Ajayi said in a statement, the presidential rewards included three-bedroom flats in Abuja, national honours of the Order of the Niger and cash payments.
“With the payment, the entire presidential rewards promised to each member of the team by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu GCFR comprising a three-bedroom flat in Abuja, national honours of OON and naira equivalent of $100,000 to players and $50,000 to officials have been fully redeemed and completed,” the statement said.
The commission said the players and officials received the title documents for their three-bedroom apartments and certificates of national honours in February 2026 during the FIBA World Cup qualifiers in Lyon, France.
According to the NSC, the documents were signed by President Tinubu.
The NSC also disclosed that the female national football team the Super Falcons got the money and houses promised them by President Tinubu.
Like D’Tigress, each Super Falcons player is expected to receive the naira equivalent of $100,000, while each official will receive $50,000.
Both teams failed to perform to expectations in recent engagements. D’Tigress lost three straight games at the FIBA World Cup, while the Super Falcons for the first time in 31 years failed to qualify for the FIFA Women’s World Cup scheduled for Brazil next year.
