The Africa Action Congress and the Accord Party have lampooned Kuje Area Council chairman, Samuel Danjuma Shekwolo over his threat to expel residents who did not vote for the All-Progressives Congress in the 2027 elections.
While speaking a forum organised by the FCT Youth Network ahead of its leadership election, Mr. Shekowlo was captured in a video saying: “I have said in my area council, it’s either you’re doing APC or leave the area council. I cannot have the minister and president doing for us what they are doing, and on the day of election, you now come and say you want to match me. I will not agree. It is either you are with us, or you are not here.”
Commenting on the speech which has drawn condemnation from human rights groups and social critics the AAC said in a statement signed by its FCT chairman Agena Robert Ande: “Let us be blunt. That statement is idiotic, reckless, barbaric, and dangerous. It is the language of a local dictator. It is the language of someone who thinks public office is a license to act like a cult leader,” the AAC said.
“Mr. Samuel, hear this: Kuje Area Council is not your father’s compound. Kuje is a Nigerian territory. You did not buy Kuje. You did not build Kuje. You were voted in to manage resources, not to own human beings.
“Your threat to ‘trace people to their houses’ is nothing but a confession that you plan to use thugs and state machinery to intimidate voters. That is the definition of electoral terrorism. And we will not allow it.”
The Accord Party called on the Inspector General of Police to invite Shekwolo for questioning over his remarks.
“If the video and the statements attributed to him are authentic, the Accord Party considers them unacceptable and deeply troubling.
“Kuje Area Council is not the private property of any individual or political party. It belongs to all its residents. An elected public officer is sworn to serve every citizen, regardless of political affiliation, ethnicity, religion, origin or voting preference.
“No public officer has the constitutional authority to compel citizens to support a particular political party or make political loyalty a condition for living peacefully in an Area Council. Nigerians have constitutional rights to freedom of movement and residence, political participation and ownership of property, subject only to lawful restrictions”. Accord Party Abuja chairman Vaniah Agbon stated.
“In view of the seriousness of this matter, the Accord Party calls on the Inspector-General of Police and relevant security agencies to thoroughly investigate the video and establish its authenticity, context and circumstances.
